The Fear of Minority Rule

“I’ve gotten to be a terrible pessimist about things. Have you read The Rise of the Colored Empires by this man Goddard?” They hadn’t. “Well, it’s a fine book, and everybody ought to read it. The idea is if we don’t look out the white race will be—will be utterly submerged. It’s all scientific stuff; it’s been proved.”

Tom Buchanan, The Great Gatsby

“Colored migration is a universal peril, menacing every part of the white world.”

Louis Stoddard, The Rising Tide of Color Against White World-Supremacy

"Today, largely because of immigration, there is no majority race in Hawaii or Houston or New York City. Within five years, there will be no majority race in our largest state, California. In a little more than 50 years, there will be no majority race in the United States. No other nation in history has gone through demographic change of this magnitude in so short a time ... [These immigrants] are energizing our culture and broadening our vision of the world. They are renewing our most basic values and reminding us all of what it truly means to be American."

Bill Clinton

“Mr. Clinton assured us that it will be a better America when we are all minorities and realize true ‘diversity.’ Well, those students [at Portland State] are going to find out, for they will spend their golden years in a Third World America.”

-Pat Buchanan, Death of the West

For the last decade, at least here in Texas there is often discussion of Latinos becoming the majority population here in Texas. For black folks we don't fear it so much, we are already a minority. Not to mention, for once the Latino population takes away the venom and hatred white folks have against blacks, mad that we dont "get over slavery", and sit around complaining, as if that is the only issue we have to be mad about. Like Jim Crow and systematic racism we were supposed to be ok with and continue to be ok with. I digress. Sorry. Also blacks and whites in Texas can usually bond together through racism to say why they don't like hispanics or as we here in Texas call them, Mexicans. It doesn't matter what part of the world you are from hispanic = Mexican.

I realized for white folks it might be a whole different perspective. I often hear about how in Texas whites are becoming a minority and the first thing out of many a white Texan's mouth is per this woman on twitter:

Now that I'm a minority in Texas, where's my scholarship and grants?

Yes, Jenniferscott25, all us negroes and minorities (excluding asians, as they are all hard working and exempt from affirmative action hiring practices in the minds of most) get free stuff. I didn't take out a loan to pay for my college, I also got in with a 1.50 GPA from my high school, they just let us get into any college of our choice, regardless of our GPA. FYI Jennifer, we don't have race based admissions in Texas universities anymore, but now whites like you are pissy because Todd can't be a legacy at UT (hook 'em horns!!!) because his GPA wasn't as high as it should have been to get in. Seriously, and again: Hook 'Em Horns!!!!!!

This is typical in Texas, which is why I get frustrated often with white people. I think often times than not many whites think that blacks and other minorities get things handed to them, not ever thinking once, that they get privileges I could never be privy to, and just because they aren't "on the books", doesn't mean they don't exist and aren't exploited and abused at the detriment of others.

I think there is always a fear if the unknown. Once a few years back, me and the husband were talking about race, and I was rallying against the white power structure as per usual, and he responded with, if blacks were ruling, they would do the same things whites do and did. I then proceeded to curse him out and get silent on him, thinking that is the most racist thing he has ever said to me. I still think it is. The assumption is if whites lose their power, minorities, blacks in particular set out the revenge on whites. Call this racist, but my mother once said that blacks could never get to the level of cruel that whites did to us in America. We could never treat them as livestock, we couldn't rape them and then sell the offspring to someone else to further exploit, we couldn't see them as less intelligent, ignorant, and "beneath us". I think to an extent this is true. Not the cruel part, but the fact that if a minority "rule" was ever to take place we simply couldn't do that because of the existing history as it stands now. The white power structure is in place, and the stays in the minds of people. Even if the white majority were to go away, no one is going to question white people's intelligence as a group because the level of intelligence is based upon the white power structure. Minorities use these very tests to determine our own intelligence. No one is going to equate them with being a cow, chicken, or donkey, because we know that to not be the case. Even with more minorities in the country, overwhelmingly white people have positions of power, be it political, corporate, and financial. Whites run it, they have the money, they have the power. They are at an advantage. Am I saying all white folks are rich and in power. No. What I do believe is that those in power, they continue to relate and put people in power who look like themselves, which means if they hold power now, they will continue to hold power.

This assumption also proves to me that whites are more aware of their privilege than most let on. They pretend it doesn't exist, but yet when threatened by an increase in a population of minorities, they fear losing it.

Another thing that is telling, is that even though it is said whites are becoming a minority. It is never said who they are becoming a minority to. Yes whites can make up less than half of a cities population, but just because minorities make over half of that population, it doesn't mean that there are all from the same group.

When we look at minorities we could be looking at asians, hispanics, blacks, and this brings up another question, are biracial people part of the this "minority", even if they are half white? Contrary to popular belief, not all us minorities get along. I think the worst racism I experienced came from hispanics, I know they don't like black people. I know asians tend not to like us either, I can't see either group aligning themselves with the "weak race that became slaves". Remember Vicente Fox's appeal to business leaders:

There is no doubt that Mexicans, filled with dignity, willingness and ability to work, are doing jobs that not even blacks want to do there in the United States.

Yes because all us blacks do low level jobs. Oh wait, I forgot we were all poor and not willing to work, instead preferring welfare. My bad Vicente Fox. I again and as per usual, digress.

I will also be quick to mention many times blacks don't want to align themselves with those who took advantage of our struggle to even come to this country and then try to look down upon us. Asian, hispanic, hell even non American blacks. We minorities aren't even cohesive within our own groups. Call a Cuban a Mexican or a Mexican a Guatemalan. Call a Korean person Chinese, and a Chinese person Japanese. Even within groups people stereotype and dislike each other.

I just think that most of the headlines of "Whites becoming the minority" is a fear tactic, that works really well, even to the most "progressive" of whites. Yes the number of whites are dwindling in certain areas, but it does not mean the group of minorities will collectively come together to get their revenge upon whites or even take away the white power structure, which continues to be more powerful than all the minorities put together.
